The Problem Guru
Straight talking,
brutally effective
yet incredibly caring
If you know Stephen you will smile at the name of this website. You will know that for many years Stephen has been teaching his students and clients to be very suspicious of ‘Gurus‘ from the personal development field and used to shudder when any of his students teased him by calling him one.
There were two important reasons for this:
1) Many people were teaching things that simply did not work. The ideas sounded good but they did not work in real life.
2) If you are following a guru you won’t be leading your own life. There is nothing wrong with getting guidance and help but some people don’t want you to leave. This is a very dangerous, and unfortunately common, highly unethical situation.
Please watch the video for more details about The Problem Guru and what it’s all about.
Being The Problem Guru
So Stephen is the Problem Guru because he is extremely good at helping people solve their problems but he does not want to run their lives. Over the years he has concentrated simply on what works the best. It sounds an obvious statement to make but over time he became more and more disillusioned at the gap between classroom theory and real world use.
Many times he has been told that what regularly happens in his clinic is:
1) A lie
2) Exaggerated
3) Impossible
These comments often come from prospective clients and from other therapists. Sometimes this is because they don’t know what is possible and sometimes because they don’t want to know because it challenges what they have been taught and that can be uncomfortable.
His Clients And Students Are The Proof
As a student who is trained in another method said:
“What used to take me months I can now do in hours”
Test, Test, Test
This has been Stephen’s motto for nearly 20 years. Seeing 40-50 people a week is a great way find out what really works because people in pain don’t mess around. They tell you straight away if they are better or not. He uses this principle in everything he does.
No Judging, Let’s Solve The Problem
No one wants to admit they have a problem; no one really wants to deal with something painful or upsetting but it is the first step to solving it.
You won’t be judged, criticised or made to feel foolish … but you will be given real help.
Ask The Problem Guru
So if you have a problem you need help with be honest with yourself, swallow your pride, set aside your fear and have a little bit of courage to pick up the phone say, “I’ve got a problem and I haven’t solved it yet”.
